Coffee Cup Cozie Tutorial

This makes a great teacher gift. I made six of them for the boys' teachers and Sunday School teachers. I put a gift card to a local coffee shop inside and attached a ribbon that went through the mouth of the cup lid and attached to a gift tag that said "Thanks a latte for all you do!" Slip the cozie on and voila!

1. Use a Cozie from an unnamed coffee shop to create a pattern. I traced mine and added approximately a half an inch around all sides for the seam allowance.

2. Select matching fabric for the interior and exterior of the cozie. I used scraps that I had on hand.

3. Trace your pattern on your fabric pieces and cut out. Be sure that your exterior and interior fabric have right sides facing.

4. Use the original cozie from an unnamed location to trace some batting for your lining. I'm sure that there is something better to use for lining the cozie, but I was trying to use up what I had on hand.

5. Place interior and exterior fabric with right sides facing. Pin batting to the top of the fabric stack. Sew around both long edges and one short edge of the pieces, leaving one end open for turning. Be sure that you catch the end of the batting when you sew the short edge.

6. Turn pieces right side out and check to make sure the batting isn't bunched up.

7. Iron flat and turn in the hem of the unsewn edge.

8. Top stitch around the entire cozie. Check to make sure the turned under edge is sewn together.

9. Use the original cozie as a guide and fold end pieces end to meet. Sew in place.

  8. This may be what officially sends me out to learn to sew! How awesome! My mom tried and tried to get me to sew with her when I was growing up and I never did. So now that I have three little girls of my own, I want to be that Mom that tries to get them to sew with me. (That is, IF I can figure out how to sew in the first place...)

But these are just.too.cute! Love them.

  10. Just seeing these today, what a great idea!

Can I ask where you got all the cups and lids? Does the unnamed coffee shop just hand out empty ones if you ask?

I guess the lids are often self-serve, but you might get some odd looks if you grab a dozen...

  11. The coffee shop where I buy the gift cards gladly gives me the lids and cups for free. I know they also sell generic ones at our SAMS Club.
