Think Outside the Box

There's an old saying that goes something like this...

"If you give a kid a $100 toy, he'll play for an hour; if you give him the box that the toy came in, he'll play for a week." No really, it's something about men eating fish, but the point is that every stinking box that crosses the thresh hold of our home is whisked away at break-neck speed to be molded into something bigger and better.

I love to see the things that they create. My 8 year-old and 5 year-old go from bickering, biting brothers to cohorts in design. They build castles with moats; race cars with headlights and even beach houses that can withstand hurricane force winds.

$100 toys? Who needs 'em? Give them an empty box, some markers, duct tape and spare bits...HEAVEN!

I think the saying is teach a man to fish and he will feed himself...give him a boat and he will go out on the lake and drink beer all day?

I ditto all that... my kids are happy with paper towel rolls and a few pieces of tape! LOL! It keeps them going for hours.

I also let them "wrap" stuff around the house with cheap wrapping paper, or give them a whole roll of that crepe party decorating stuff... amazing how long that lasts!
