COSTumes

SO Halloween is just around the corner. Don't act all shocked. You knew it was coming! I've had a game plan in my mind for a while now for making the kids' costumes. The 3 oldest will all "match" a bit with a Harry Potter theme, but being the veteran mom that I am, I know that the youngest will be very leery of partaking in any elaborate costume. Been there, done that. So I found a really cute idea for him that I hope he'll wear.

This will be my first year making costumes. We usually go with the store-bought variety. Good enough for me, good enough for my kids. When I was little, the store-bought costumes consisted of a cheap plastic-y one piece part for the body and an equally cheap plastic-y mask with small holes cut out for your eyes, nose and mouth. It was held on by a thin piece of elastic that wrapped around the back of your head. You usually ended up popping yourself in the ear one good time trying to get it on and most often, it had to be repaired at some point. This was a one-time use deal. By the end of the night, your costume usually had at least one rip in it and your face was so stinky and sweaty from the mask that you swore you'd never wear a costume like THAT again.

My favorite costume was Wonder Woman. I can remember drooling over that thing the week before Halloween. Anticipating how cool I'd be. Here's another shocker, the stores didn't stock Halloween stuff until mid-October! Can you imagine? The horror!

Anyway, back to me making the costumes. I thought that I could make them better and cheaper than the store-bought kind. Boy was I wrong! We may have to get a second mortgage on the house to pay for these suckers, but I can guarantee that they will be WAY cute! I just need to get in gear and finish them up! So with Halloween approaching (only 40-ish days away), you better get busy too!

I can't wait to see them! My girls have odd requests this year. I have Nancy Drew, a Pirate and a We Don't Really Know and I'm refusing Dora.

I always make my kiddos Halloween costumes...and you think it is going to be cheaper, but it ends up costing a fortune! But you are right...homemade costumes are usually way cuter than the store bought ones!

Gosh, you mums are so organized and creative.
I have to make do with the party shop as I can't sew to save my life but, although it's is a life long ambition; one day I will learn.
Looking forward to seeing the outfits. :)

I've got to get my butt in gear! I need to buy a new sewing machine so hopefully I'll begin working on Colin's costume in the next few weeks, but that's just one costume vs. you doing 4!
