This is how we roll ...

Packing for a road trip for a family of 6 takes careful planning and attention to detail. This was our second cross country journey to the beautiful state of Minnesota to visit Archie's family. It went surprisingly well and I've collected a few tried and true traveling tips.

I packed a set of clothes for each family member in a clear container. That way, we only had to take in one container at each hotel stop. Last year, I used bags ... the tubs were much easier to contend with.

Each small family member had their own pocket to store books and toys to subdue them on the long journey. They also had a DVD player with some old favorites and some new movies.

The best tip that I have though is to stock up on 2 things:
DUM DUM SUCKERS and to smarten them back up SMARTIES! (and yes, I know that Smarties are all together different in Canada, eh!)

I am in shock and awe about 2 things:

1) You're super mom to be traveling across country with kids. Yay for you!

2) What? Smarties are supposed to be chocolate filled little candies. I had no idea they were different in the States. Up here in Canada, we call those things "rockets". They are also delicious and won't melt in the car which was the first thing I thought when you mentioned Smarties. :)

You should totally give lessons! My husband would love it if I was half as organized as you when we travel!

Hope you all are having a great time up there in Minn. We are headed out to PA on Thursday. Love the tips. I've got a few of my own to add in a few days =)

Definitely gonna add the candy to my list though. =) --

That fact that you are willing to travel cross-country with a family of 6 leads me to believe that you know what you are talking about! I'll keep your advice in mind!

Girl... I hear you on that. It is hard traveling with kids... especially long hours. When we went to FL last year, it was 12 hours of.... uh.... it wasn't THAT bad. I had a Ziploc for each kid with brand new stuff.... one new item for each day of travel. Of course, the movies, books, art stuff and video games are wonderful.

Dum dums and Smarties... I give these to my students before testing, then after testing... they come in Dum dums and leave Smarties.

Love the tips.
